Potato, or aloo, appears everywhere in Indian kitchens: aloo sabzi, aloo paratha, poha, dosa masala, samosa, tikki, chaat, vada pav, chips, and fries. This makes it one of the most common accidental foods dogs receive from plates.

Plain cooked potato is not automatically dangerous, but regular Indian potato dishes are usually not dog-safe. They often contain oil, salt, chilli, turmeric, mustard seeds, onion, garlic, masala, or deep-fried batter. The dog-safe version is very different: plain, soft, cooked, and small in quantity.

Potato is also a starchy food, so it should not become the main filler in a dog’s diet every day.

Is It Safe for Dogs?

Plain cooked potato can be safe in small amounts. Raw potato and green parts should be avoided. Potato should be an occasional carbohydrate, not a daily base.

How to Serve It Safely

Boil or bake the potato completely.
Remove any green spots or sprouted areas; do not use green potatoes.
Mash or cube a small amount.
Serve plain without salt, butter, ghee, milk, masala, onion, garlic, or chilli.
Offer separately, not from aloo sabzi.

How Much Can You Give?

Small dogs: 1-2 teaspoons mashed potato.

Medium dogs: 1 tablespoon.

Large dogs: 1-2 tablespoons occasionally.

Treat-level feeding is enough; do not use potato to fill every meal.

When to Avoid

Avoid potato for diabetic, obese, pancreatitis-prone, or weight-loss dogs unless your veterinarian includes it in a plan.
Avoid raw potato, green potato, fries, chips, aloo tikki, samosa filling, aloo paratha, and spicy aloo sabzi.
