Which Vaccines Does a Dog Need in India? Core and Lifestyle Vaccines

A current India-focused canine vaccination guide covering distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, rabies, leptospirosis, kennel cough, puppy schedules, boosters and risk-based planning.

Core vaccines

Vaccine groupWhy it mattersIndia relevance
DistemperHighly contagious and often fatal neurological/systemic diseaseOngoing dog-to-dog exposure
ParvovirusSevere vomiting, diarrhoea and sepsis in puppiesEnvironmental persistence and incomplete puppy vaccination
AdenovirusProtects against infectious canine hepatitisIncluded in standard core combinations
RabiesFatal zoonotic infectionIndia remains rabies-endemic
LeptospirosisKidney/liver disease and zoonotic riskUrban water, rodents and monsoon exposure

WSAVA's 2024 guidance identifies distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus as worldwide core vaccines and states that rabies should be core wherever endemic. AAHA updated its guidance to include leptospirosis as core for most dogs.

Why puppy vaccination is a series

Maternal antibodies protect young puppies but can also interfere with vaccine response. Repeated vaccination through the high-risk early-life window reduces the chance of a gap in protection.

  • Start according to veterinary risk assessment and product label
  • Repeat core combination doses at appropriate intervals
  • Ensure the final early-life core dose is given at the veterinarian-recommended age
  • Give the required follow-up booster
  • Avoid high-risk dog areas before protection is established
  • Keep every vaccine sticker and batch record
Important: A single early puppy injection does not mean the puppy is fully protected. Do not take partially vaccinated puppies to contaminated parks, pet shops or group boarding.

Lifestyle and exposure-based vaccines

Bordetella and parainfluenza

Important for boarding, daycare, grooming, shows, classes and frequent dog contact.

Canine influenza

Considered where the virus circulates or travel and facility exposure justify it.

Leishmania or Lyme

Availability and need depend on geography, travel and local disease ecology.

Other products

Use only when the pathogen, product and individual risk support vaccination.

Adult boosters and unknown history

An adult dog with reliable records follows the veterinarian's core and lifestyle schedule. Dogs with unknown history are generally treated as unprotected rather than assumed immune.

Long-duration immunity for core viral vaccines means not every component is necessarily repeated annually, while some bacterial and respiratory vaccines require more frequent boosting.

What antibody titres can and cannot do

Antibody testing can support decisions for distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus in selected adult dogs. It does not replace legally required rabies vaccination and is less useful for leptospirosis or Bordetella.

Boarding and multi-dog facilities

  • Core vaccines current
  • Rabies documentation
  • Leptospirosis risk reviewed
  • Bordetella/respiratory coverage within facility rules
  • No active cough, vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Adequate time for immunity before admission

India-specific planning

WHO identifies dog vaccination as the most cost-effective strategy for preventing human rabies. India-specific plans should also account for monsoon leptospirosis exposure, community dogs, travel, boarding and local product availability.

Use vaccines from a reliable cold chain and a registered veterinary clinic. A sticker without examination, batch record or storage confidence is not a complete preventive-care programme.

Dogsvilla practical tip: Dogsvilla boarding requirements should specify vaccine names and acceptable timing—not simply ask whether a dog is 'fully vaccinated'.
