Exposure route changes first aid
| Exposure route | Immediate priority | Unsafe response |
|---|---|---|
| Swallowed substance | Call for ingredient-specific advice | Automatic vomiting or force-feeding |
| Skin or coat | Prevent licking and obtain washing instructions | Using solvents, kerosene or concentrated chemicals |
| Eye exposure | Flush gently with clean water or saline while arranging care | Applying random eye drops |
| Inhaled fumes | Move to fresh air without entering an unsafe area | Waiting in the contaminated room |
| Injection or bite | Limit movement and seek emergency care | Cutting, sucking or applying a tourniquet |
Why vomiting is not universal first aid
Professional emesis may be useful after selected recent ingestions in an alert dog. It is unsafe after corrosive cleaners, petroleum products, sharp material, altered consciousness, seizures or breathing difficulty.
Salt, mustard and ipecac are not safe home methods. Hydrogen peroxide can cause severe gastritis, aspiration or dosing errors and should only be used after specific professional direction.
What veterinary treatment may include
Treatment may involve controlled decontamination, intravenous fluids, oxygen, seizure control, antidotes, blood products and repeated kidney, liver, clotting or glucose monitoring. Some toxins require observation even when the first examination is normal.
