Seek urgent care for

  • A puppy, toy breed or diabetic dog refusing food
  • Repeated vomiting or inability to retain water
  • A painful or swollen abdomen
  • Pale gums, collapse or profound weakness
  • Suspected foreign object, toxin or medicine exposure
  • Black stool, jaundice or major weight loss

Appetite loss is a sign, not a diagnosis

Anorexia means absence of appetite, while hyporexia means reduced intake. Pseudo-anorexia describes a dog that wants to eat but cannot because of oral pain, swallowing difficulty or mechanical problems.

Dogs may eat less during heat, travel or stress, but medical disease must be considered when the change persists or is accompanied by abnormal behaviour.

Oral and throat painDental disease, oral tumour, foreign materialDropping food, drooling, one-sided chewing
Systemic diseaseKidney, liver, endocrine or infectious diseaseThirst change, jaundice, fever or weight loss

Medicine effectsAntibiotics, chemotherapy and other drugsOnset after starting or changing treatment

What to record before the appointment

  • Last normal meal and exact amount eaten
  • Water intake and urination
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea and stool colour
  • Current medicines and supplements
  • Possible toxin or foreign-body access
  • Body weight and recent weight change
  • Whether the dog wants food but cannot chew or swallow
Important: Do not repeatedly change foods, add oily gravies or offer dozens of treats. This can worsen gastrointestinal disease and makes the history harder to interpret.

How veterinarians investigate appetite loss

Examination focuses on hydration, pain, mouth, abdomen, temperature and body condition. Blood tests, urinalysis, faecal tests and imaging are selected according to the pattern.

  • CBC and chemistry
  • Electrolytes and blood glucose
  • Urinalysis
  • Abdominal radiographs or ultrasound
  • Pancreatic, liver or adrenal tests
  • Oral examination and dental imaging
  • Infectious-disease testing

Safe feeding support

When vomiting is controlled and swallowing is normal, small amounts of a complete, palatable diet may be offered. Warming food slightly can increase aroma, but it should not be hot.

Dogs that cannot meet energy needs may need anti-nausea treatment, appetite support or a feeding tube. Early enteral nutrition can be safer and more effective than repeated force-feeding.

Dogs that need earlier intervention

Puppies and toy breeds

Limited energy reserves make hypoglycaemia and dehydration more dangerous.

Diabetic dogs

Food refusal changes insulin safety and requires direct instructions.

Senior dogs

Dental disease, kidney disease and cancer are more common.

Postoperative dogs

Pain, nausea and ileus should be treated rather than accepted as normal.

India-specific causes and mistakes

  • Heat and power-cut stress
  • Spoiled food during summer or monsoon
  • Tick-borne infection
  • Parvovirus in incompletely vaccinated puppies
  • Human painkillers and herbal remedies
  • Plastic, cloth or bone ingestion
  • Multiple family members offering rich alternatives
Dogsvilla practical tip: At boarding, weigh dogs with reduced appetite and record actual grams eaten. 'Ate a little' is too vague to identify deterioration.
