Can I Feed My Dog Coffee?

The Indian-home answer
Coffee may seem harmless because many homes have it every day, but dogs should not drink coffee. Hot coffee, cold coffee, filter coffee, instant coffee, espresso, coffee cake, coffee ice cream, coffee beans, and caffeine powders are all unsafe.
Caffeine is a stimulant. Dogs are much more sensitive to caffeine than humans, and concentrated coffee products can be particularly dangerous.
Why caffeine is risky
Caffeine can overstimulate the nervous system and heart. It can cause restlessness, vomiting, fast heartbeat, tremors, seizures, or collapse in serious cases. Small dogs and puppies are at higher risk from smaller amounts.
The biggest danger is concentrated sources: coffee beans, grounds, espresso, cold brew concentrate, energy drinks, caffeine tablets, pre-workout powders, and coffee-flavoured desserts.
Where coffee exposure happens
A dog may lick spilled coffee from the floor, drink from a cup, eat coffee cake, chew a coffee sachet, raid a dustbin with coffee grounds, or steal a coffee-flavoured protein bar. Cold coffee with milk and sugar is still unsafe because caffeine remains the problem.
In Indian homes, coffee cups often sit on low tables. Keep them out of reach and rinse cups before leaving them unattended.
What to do if your dog drank coffee
Call a vet if your dog drank more than a tiny lick, ate coffee beans/grounds, consumed concentrated coffee, or shows restlessness, vomiting, panting, shaking, racing heart, or weakness. Share the amount, type, time, and dog’s weight.
Do not give milk, curd, lemon, ghee, or salt water as a home remedy. Do not wait if the dog has eaten coffee grounds or caffeine products.
Dog-safe drink options
Fresh water is the best drink for dogs. In some cases, plain curd or buttermilk without salt/spices may be tolerated as food, not as a caffeine substitute. Coconut water may be occasional in small amounts for some dogs, but water should remain the main drink.
