5 Natural Ways To Calm Your Dog During Diwali And Fireworks Season

Diwali, wedding season crackers and New Year fireworks make late October to January brutal for noise-sensitive dogs. Five natural options, and why CBD isn

For Indian dogs, firework stress isn't a single evening — it stretches from Navratri and Dussehra through Diwali, into wedding season, and on to New Year's Eve. Many dogs that seem fine most of the year develop real anxiety over these months. Start any of the remedies below a few days before the noise begins, not on the night itself.

1. Homeopathy

Homeopathic remedies are genuinely easy to access in India through AYUSH-recognised pharmacies and brands like SBL, Bakson's and Dr. Reckeweg, sold in most Indian cities. Commonly used remedies include Aconite 30C for acute fear (repeat every 15 minutes during an episode), Phosphorus 30C for general noise phobia, and Borax 6C specifically for thunder-and-noise-related fear.

2. Herbs

  • Ashwagandha — an Ayurvedic adaptogen sold everywhere in India, traditionally used for stress and anxiety; increasingly used for anxious dogs in small, appropriately dosed amounts.
  • Jatamansi — another Ayurvedic herb specifically associated with calming the nervous system, available through Ayurvedic pharmacies.
  • Chamomile — as a mild tea, cooled and added to food or water.

3. Flower remedies

Bach Flower Rescue Remedy is imported but available through Indian pet and homeopathy retailers online. A couple of drops in the water bowl or directly in the mouth before the noise starts can take the edge off mild anxiety.

4. A safe den and white noise

Set up a covered crate or a small enclosed space away from windows, ideally in the most interior room of the house, and run a fan, cooler or white-noise app to mask the crackers. This matters more in Indian housing, where firecrackers are often set off in the same lane or society compound, making the noise unusually close and sharp.

5. Talk to your vet about anti-anxiety medication for severe cases

If your dog is destructive, tries to bolt, or shows extreme panic, a short course of vet-prescribed anti-anxiety medication for the worst nights is reasonable and kind. Note that CBD, commonly recommended abroad, sits in a legal grey zone in India under the NDPS Act and is not reliably regulated here — ashwagandha and jatamansi are more practical, legal options to discuss with a holistic vet.

Vet note: Make sure your dog is microchipped or wearing an ID tag through this season — more Indian dogs go missing from bolting during Diwali than at any other time of year.
