Aspirin for Dogs: Ulcer, Bleeding and Kidney Risks

A practical medication-safety guide to aspirin in dogs covering salicylate poisoning, gastrointestinal ulcers, bleeding, kidney risk, interactions and safer veterinary pain management.

Urgent aspirin warning signs

  • Repeated vomiting or vomiting blood
  • Black, tarry stool
  • Pale gums, weakness or collapse
  • Rapid breathing, high temperature or severe panting
  • Tremors, seizures or altered consciousness
  • Reduced urine or marked thirst

How aspirin works

Aspirin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that reduces prostaglandin production and irreversibly affects platelet function. These effects can reduce pain but also weaken gastrointestinal protection and increase bleeding.

Dogs eliminate salicylate differently from people, and chronic repeated dosing can accumulate. Age, dehydration, kidney disease, liver disease and concurrent medicines all change safety.

Who is at higher risk

  • Dogs with kidney, liver, heart or gastrointestinal disease
  • Dehydrated dogs or those with vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Dogs taking another NSAID
  • Dogs receiving prednisone or another corticosteroid
  • Dogs with low platelets or clotting disease
  • Pregnant, very young or frail senior dogs

Signs of salicylate toxicity

SeverityPossible signsConcern
Early gastrointestinalVomiting, poor appetite, abdominal painUlceration and dehydration
BleedingBlack stool, blood, pale gumsPlatelet inhibition and GI injury
SystemicRapid breathing, fever, weaknessAcid-base disturbance
Severe neurologicalTremors, seizures, comaLife-threatening toxicosis
Important: Do not switch directly from aspirin to carprofen, meloxicam or another NSAID. The required washout depends on the dog, dose, duration and clinical situation.

Dangerous combinations

Combining aspirin with another NSAID or a corticosteroid substantially increases ulcer and perforation risk. Anticoagulants, some supplements and medicines affecting kidney blood flow can add further risk.

Wintergreen and birch oils contain methyl salicylate and can cause aspirin-like toxicity when concentrated products are swallowed or absorbed.

What the veterinarian may do

Recent ingestion may be managed with controlled decontamination when appropriate. Blood count, chemistry, urine and acid-base testing assess bleeding, kidney injury and systemic effects.

Treatment may include gastrointestinal protection, intravenous fluids, temperature control, blood products and management of seizures or severe acidosis.

Safer pain management

Veterinary-approved NSAIDs have labelled dosing and safety information for dogs, but they still require risk assessment and monitoring. Arthritis management may also include weight control, rehabilitation, home traction and disease-modifying plans.

  • Use one prescribed anti-inflammatory plan
  • Know the exact product and strength
  • Stop and call for vomiting, black stool or appetite loss
  • Complete recommended blood and urine monitoring
  • Never share one dog's prescription with another
  • Disclose every supplement and steroid

Common medication errors in India

Aspirin may be given after advice from a neighbour, pharmacy or internet chart without considering body weight, dehydration or interacting medicines. Combination human products may also contain caffeine or paracetamol.

Always take a photograph of the blister pack and note how many tablets are missing. Brand names are less useful than the active ingredient and milligram strength.

Dogsvilla practical tip: Every boarding medication form should list the active ingredient—not only the brand. Refuse unlabelled tablets and do not administer owner-supplied human pain medicine without a veterinary prescription.
